Current Research Interest

The basic concept is to convert knowledge-based science achieved in this Lab to the technology of tomorrow. The key to such concept relies on: -

  • Identification and characterization of proteinaceous amylase and/ or protease inhibitors from non-host plant sources for the polyphagous-pest, Helicoverpa armigera. Two protease inhibitor genes and an amylase/ trypsin inhibitor gene have been cloned recently (Sequences submitted to GenBank).
  • Artificial feeding with these inhibitors proved detrimental to armigera (Collaboration).
  • Complete peas plant regenerated as a key to incorporation and expression of the above genes in peas/ chickpea through Agrobacterium.
  • Potential of these inhibitors as tumoricidal, MMP-inhibitor, t-PAI etc. is also under consideration.
  • Protein Engineering (Synthesis of designer proteins) is another aim of this Lab.
