Institutions, like organisms,
must evolve and adapt. Continuous adaptation is essential for every
successful institution. Nowhere, is it truer than in science--- where
theories undergo tectonic shifts every few years and new missions are
defined. Our journey began in 1935 as Indian Institute of medical
Research in a small house in central Calcutta. The vision of the
founder, Dr J.C. Ray, was to solve the pressing health problems of our
country. He realized that the health problems of a country can be
properly addressed only through a deep understanding of biology. In
those days, much of biology and medicine was shrouded in mystery.
Ensuing revolution in molecular biology however, changed all that and
unveiled action of biological molecules that give rise to the wonder,
we call life. Progress in molecular biology over the last several;
decades has now ushered in the era of chemical and physical biology,
where we may dream of understanding life in terms of chemical physical
principles. Thus, goals have to be redefined and new trails have to be
blazed.
In an extra-ordinary foresight, the institute was named as
Indian Institute of Chemical Biology some 25 years ago, when the term
was neither fashionable nor well known. In the dawn of the new century,
which may be the century of biology,----- Indian Institute of Chemical
Biology is poised to make an impact in understanding the chemistry of
life, finally removing the veil of mystery around the life. The
spin-offs are bound to have a major impact on the health scenario of
the nation. This new website is a reflection of our new mission in the
new century.
